Human Error Crashes Boeing 747-200 Due to Incorrect Takeoff Weight Calculation
The crash of MK Airlines flight 1602 in 2004 was a tragic reminder that even with advanced technology, human error can still be a major contributor to accidents. On August 12, 2004, a Boeing 747-200 cargo plane, bound for Zaragoza in Spain, took off from Halifax International Airport without properly accounting for its weight.
The crew used the wrong takeoff weight, entering 240,000 kg instead of the actual 353,000 kg. This resulted in incorrect calculations for V1 and Vrotate speeds, as well as required thrust settings. The aircraft struggled to lift off, hitting the runway multiple times before crashing into terrain and catching fire.
The investigation found that fatigue was a significant factor in the accident, with the crew having flown long hours without adequate rest. The lack of thorough cross-checking of performance data also contributed to the error. In fact, the Boeing Laptop Tool (BLT) used for calculations had not been properly trained on by the crew.
The incident highlights the importance of vigilance and verification in critical operations like aviation. Even with advanced technology, human factors can still play a significant role in accidents.
