Hyderabad Man Stabbed in Utah Hate Crime Discharged but Recovery Expected to Take Months
Syed Sohailuddin, a Hyderabad native, was brutally stabbed multiple times in a suspected hate crime at a shopping mall in Utah, US. The attack occurred on July 13 at the Valley Fair Mall in West Valley City, Utah, where Sohailuddin was working at a kiosk.
The suspect, Peter Michael Larsen, allegedly approached Sohailuddin under the pretext of asking for water before questioning him about his identity. He then pulled out a knife and repeatedly stabbed him. Investigators said Larsen later admitted to targeting Sohailuddin because he was Muslim and intended to kill Muslims.
Sohailuddin suffered severe injuries, including to his neck, chest, back, hands, and other parts of his body. He has undergone three surgeries so far and doctors have advised another surgery in about two months as part of his treatment. His recovery is expected to take several more months.
The victim's wife is single-handedly caring for him while also looking after their two young children. She is struggling with the physical and emotional burden, which is taking a toll on her mental health. The family said they are yet to receive US visas despite applying soon after the incident, leaving them unable to travel and support the couple during the crisis.
