Hyundai Shifts Gears: Delayed Autonomy Software Now Targets Late 2029

Hyundai has pushed back its plans to launch vehicles running its own driver-assistance software, Atria, to late 2029. This delay is two years later than initially promised.

The new strategy was implemented by Park Min-woo, a group president who joined Hyundai in January and previously worked at Nvidia. The company will now lean on Nvidia's silicon for its Level 2+ and Level 2++ systems, which are set to launch in 2028.

Hyundai's vehicles built on Nvidia's Hyperion 10 platform will initially skip the use of lidar sensors, relying instead on cameras, ultrasonic sensors, and radar. However, lidar remains under consideration for Level 3 autonomous driving, where the car takes responsibility under defined conditions.
