IBBQ vs. BBH: Which Biotech ETF Offers Better Performance
The two biotech-focused exchange-traded funds (ETFs) under scrutiny are Invesco Nasdaq Biotechnology ETF (IBBQ) and VanEck Biotech ETF (BBH). The former offers lower costs and broader market diversification, while the latter provides a more concentrated investment in 25 leading biotechnology companies.
Both funds target the healthcare sector, specifically focusing on pharmaceutical and biotechnology firms involved in drug discovery. The Invesco fund holds 251 stocks within the Nasdaq Biotechnology Index, including Amgen (AMGN), Vertex Pharmaceuticals (VRTX), and Gilead Sciences (GILD) as its largest positions.
The VanEck fund follows the MVIS US Listed Biotech 25 Index, maintaining a much tighter basket of 25 holdings with top positions in Amgen, Gilead Sciences, and Vertex Pharmaceuticals. The Invesco fund has a lower expense ratio at 0.19% compared to the VanEck fund's 0.35%, offering a higher payout with a 0.8% yield versus the 0.4% offered by its competitor.
A five-year performance comparison reveals that IBBQ's broader exposure has meaningfully outpaced BBH's concentrated bet, even as both funds weathered comparable drawdowns during biotech's rougher stretches. The extra 226 names in IBBQ are not diluting the winners but cushioning against the losers no one can predict in advance.
