IBM Achieves Quantum Advantage with Confidence
IBM has claimed to have achieved quantum advantage in three separate instances, using new validation techniques that provide confidence in the results. This is a significant breakthrough for the development of practical quantum computers.
The holy grail of quantum computing is a machine that can solve problems beyond the capabilities of classical supercomputers. However, proving the validity of these solutions has been a major challenge. Classical machines cannot simulate certain types of quantum circuits, making it difficult to verify the results.
IBM and its collaborators have developed new techniques to tackle this problem. In one approach, they modified the random circuit sampling method, which was used in Google's first claim of quantum advantage in 2019. They built circuits using only 'Clifford gates', which can be efficiently simulated classically, and added non-Clifford gates later on.
Using this method, IBM demonstrated quantum advantage with a 95% confidence guarantee on a 70-qubit circuit running on their Heron processor. This is a significant improvement over previous claims of quantum advantage.
