IBM has completed its acquisition of HRL Laboratories, LLC, a research institution specializing in quantum computing and advanced technologies. This move brings together IBM's superconducting quantum computing technology with HRL's expertise in silicon-spin qubits.

The acquisition adds to IBM's quantum manufacturing operations and creates opportunities for collaboration with Anderon, IBM's quantum wafer foundry. Boeing and General Motors, HRL's former owners, will continue to partner with IBM on quantum applications and advanced technology development.

IBM plans to develop a fault-tolerant quantum computer, IBM Quantum Starling, by 2029, which is expected to perform 100 million quantum operations. The company aims to follow this with Blue Jay, targeted for the mid-2030s.
