IBM Almaden Research Center Rezoning Clears Path for Potential Redevelopment
The IBM Almaden Research Center in South San Jose has been rezoned by the city council, paving the way for potential redevelopment or repurposing of the site. The 35.1-acre industrial park zoning district and 565.1 acres of surrounding land zoned as open space will allow for flexible use of the property. IBM has put the research center on the market after deciding to close it and shift workers to its Silicon Valley Lab.
Multiple developers have expressed interest in the site, with some discussing potential uses such as data centers, advanced manufacturing, and general office spaces. However, concerns were raised by local residents about the impact of industrial development on the area's open space. 'Open space zoning does not equate to permanent protection,' said Lena Drape, a conservation specialist.
City Council members voted 9-2 in favor of the rezoning, with some expressing urgency due to potential hazards associated with vacant land. However, others called for a delay to allow more community input and awareness of the proposal.
