IBM and NASA Unveil Open-Source Lunar Exploration AI Model
IBM and NASA have released an open-source AI model to support lunar exploration. The NASA-IBM Lunar Foundation Model is one of the first publicly available foundation models for scientific exploration of the Moon.
The model was trained on a vast dataset of lunar observation data curated by IBM and NASA researchers. This dataset combines tens of thousands of images and maps showing unique geophysical properties of the lunar surface from various missions, including the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) and the GRAIL mission.
Researchers can use this model to investigate multiple lunar phenomena, such as potential lunar ice deposits, volcanic history, and crater detection. The model has already shown impressive results in identifying areas with high potential for lunar ice, reducing error by up to 22% compared to other models.
The open-source release of the NASA-IBM Lunar Foundation Model marks an important collaboration between IBM and NASA. By making this model available to the global research community, scientists can accelerate their progress in lunar exploration and unlock new discoveries.
