IBM Bets Big on Quantum Computing, Sees Trillion-Dollar Potential
IBM CEO Arvind Krishna predicts that quantum computing will start contributing to revenue and profit by 2028 or 2029. This marks a shift in IBM's view of the technology from an experimental field to a viable business opportunity. Quantum computers could deliver performance far beyond conventional computers at a lower cost, making them attractive for industries like pharmaceuticals, logistics, and finance.
IBM has been a major player in quantum research for years, with its Quantum System One and Quantum System Two platforms already deployed at select client sites. However, revenue generation has remained limited as the technology is still in early stages of adoption.
The company's $2 billion investment in a standalone quantum chip foundry underscores a broader push by the U.S. to maintain leadership in quantum computing, seen as a strategic technology for national security and economic competitiveness. Other countries are also investing heavily in quantum research.
