IBM Bolsters Quantum Capabilities with HRL Labs Acquisition
IBM has completed its acquisition of HRL Laboratories, expanding its quantum hardware capabilities. The deal adds HRL's work in silicon spin qubits and quantum sensing to IBM's existing roadmap for scalable, fault-tolerant systems.
The acquisition gives IBM two major hardware tracks plus extra materials science depth as it works on modular cryogenic systems, L-couplers, and its plan to link hundreds of quantum chips in shared ultra cold environments.
This move reinforces IBM's narrative around AI and hybrid cloud, which already leans on its hybrid cloud and AI strategy, quantum roadmap, and mainframe advances like the z17 and the new dual architecture Z and LinuxONE processor as key catalysts.
