IBM Bolsters Quantum Computing with HRL Laboratories Acquisition

IBM has bolstered its position in quantum computing by acquiring HRL Laboratories. The deal gives IBM expertise in quantum sensing, materials science, electronics, and manufacturing.

The integration of HRL's silicon-spin qubits will complement IBM's superconducting approach to quantum computing. This move supports IBM's efforts to develop scalable quantum systems.

IBM expects its Quantum Starling system to perform 100 million quantum operations by 2029, with a next-generation system, Blue Jay, targeted for the mid-2030s.

Rivals Microsoft and Alphabet are also advancing in quantum computing. Microsoft is expanding its Azure Quantum ecosystem, while Alphabet is pushing forward with neutral-atom technologies and post-quantum cryptography.
