IBM Bolsters Quantum Tech with Acquisition of HRL Laboratories
IBM has acquired HRL Laboratories to boost its quantum technologies portfolio. The acquisition gives IBM access to silicon-spin qubit technology, advanced research capabilities, and expertise across multiple hardware layers.
The deal brings together IBM's superconducting-qubit program with HRL's work in quantum sensing, materials, cryogenics, and electronics. This strategic move is expected to strengthen IBM's quantum hardware roadmap and support innovation across the wider quantum technology stack.
HRL's silicon-spin qubits are complementary to IBM's focus on superconducting quantum computing. The company plans to continue developing its own superconducting-qubit systems, including work on hardware, error correction, software, and algorithms.
