IBM Breaks Ground in Mainframe Processor Tech with Native IBM Z and Arm Integration
IBM has made significant strides in its mainframe processor technology by unveiling a chip that can execute both IBM Z and Arm instruction sets natively, eliminating the need for separate silicon or software emulation.
The company's next-generation IBM Z and LinuxONE platforms feature an innovative architecture where each of the 11 high-performance cores can process both z/Architecture and AArch64 instructions concurrently. This integration is a result of a strategic partnership with Arm announced in April 2026.
The new chip, manufactured on a 2-nanometer process, runs at clock speeds exceeding 5.7 GHz and features dedicated on-chip data processing units for I/O acceleration, AI inference accelerators, compression, cryptography, and sorting workloads. The cache architecture is also notable, with each core carrying a private 36 MB L2 cache feeding into a virtual L3 pool of 432 MB.
The company claims that this processor represents a major architectural breakthrough for IBM Z and LinuxONE, offering more choice to enterprises modernizing their application portfolios and integrating AI into core business processes. The integration with Arm's ecosystem is also seen as a significant development, with the potential to bring native Arm compute and its software ecosystem to mission-critical enterprise infrastructure.
