IBM Brings 120-Qubit Quantum Computer to Switzerland
Switzerland is set to become one of the first countries in Europe to have a 120-qubit quantum computer, thanks to an agreement between IBM and Lockheed Martin. The new system will be housed at the Swiss National Supercomputing Centre (CSCS) in Lugano by the end of 2026.
The IBM Quantum System Two will be powered by IBM's Nighthawk processor and operated by the company itself, with ETH Zurich providing infrastructure and technical expertise. This collaboration is part of a broader initiative to create a quantum innovation hub at ETH Zurich through an offset agreement with armasuisse, Switzerland's Federal Office for Defence Procurement.
The project aims to give Swiss researchers and companies access to advanced quantum computing hardware and expertise. It will also provide education and workforce development programs, including courses, certifications, workshops, hackathons, and other training initiatives.
