IBM Brings Quantum Computing Hub to Switzerland with Nighthawk-Powered System
IBM is set to install and operate Switzerland's first IBM Quantum System Two by the end of 2026. The system will be installed at the Swiss National Supercomputing Centre in Lugano and powered by IBM's Nighthawk processor.
The agreement brings together IBM, Lockheed Martin, ETH Zurich, and Switzerland's federal defense-procurement office in a single hub. None of the parties disclosed the contract value, IBM's expected revenue, or pricing for access, which is significant given IBM's $17.2 billion in quarterly revenue.
Despite the lack of financial details, IBM shares rose 3.96% to close at $243.29 on Friday. However, it's unclear whether this gain is directly related to the Swiss announcement, as there was no disclosed pricing or contract value provided.
The system will be used by researchers, universities, and selected Swiss companies, with ETH Zurich and the center providing power, cooling, and security. IBM will handle installation, maintenance, and operation, while users can access IBM's cloud quantum fleet during installation.
