IBM CEO Acknowledges Software Sales Shortfall, Sees Opportunities in AI
IBM CEO Arvind Krishna acknowledged that the company experienced an execution shortfall in its second quarter software sales, but expressed confidence in its ability to adapt and grow.
The shortfall was attributed to a sudden shift in customer spending from specific parts of IBM's software portfolio to AI-focused hardware components outside of IBM's traditional offerings. However, Krishna noted that about one-third of the deals that slipped have since closed, indicating that the issue may be more related to timing than destruction.
The company witnessed a 'shift in client spending priorities' during the end of June, with clients prioritizing servers, storage, and memory purchases to secure supply-constrained infrastructure ahead of expected price increases. This led to IBM failing to close a double-digit number of large deals on the timelines it expected.
