IBM Claims Quantum Advantage with New Validation Techniques
IBM has claimed to have achieved quantum advantage in a series of papers released yesterday. The holy grail for quantum computing is a machine that can solve problems beyond the reach of classical supercomputers, something known as 'quantum advantage.'
The research team, which includes collaborators from the University of Chicago and startups Algorithmiq and Qedma, has demonstrated three separate instances of quantum advantage alongside methods to validate the results. These approaches provide concrete guarantees about the fidelity of the computations, with one technique offering a 95% confidence guarantee.
The researchers have tackled the problem of validation from different angles. One approach modified random circuit sampling, which was previously used by Google in its first claim of quantum advantage in 2019. This method involves running a randomly generated sequence of quantum gates on a quantum processor and comparing the results to classical simulations.
Another approach used error mitigation to simulate physical systems beyond what's possible with leading classical methods. The researchers ran their model using slower gates, with noise deliberately injected into the calculation, and found that the results remained stable. This consistency is seen as evidence of quantum advantage.
