IBM Combines Arm and Mainframe Architectures in Groundbreaking Processor
IBM has unveiled a groundbreaking processor that combines Arm and z/Architecture in a single CPU core, marking a significant milestone in the evolution of mainframe computing. The new design, developed using 2-nm technology, features eleven high-performance cores capable of operating at over 5.7 GHz.
The key innovation lies in every individual core's ability to natively process both Arm and IBM Z instructions, making it a dual-architecture processor. This allows for the seamless execution of Arm-native Linux applications on IBM Z and LinuxONE systems without requiring external translation or virtualization solutions.
IBM has traditionally relied on large, highly clocked cores in its mainframe processors, and this new design retains that approach. The processor also includes dedicated accelerators for AI, such as AI inference units for real-time fraud detection during transactions, as well as a Data Processing Unit for I/O tasks and hardware accelerators for compression and cryptography.
The company emphasizes that this is not a conventional Arm server but rather an expansion of its existing mainframe architecture with a second native ISA. This could provide significant practical advantages for companies needing to integrate modern applications into their existing mainframe infrastructures, where some legacy software may be decades old and newly developed components are increasingly being created for Kubernetes, Linux, and Arm.
