IBM Connects Cryogenic Modules for Quantum Computing, Paving Way for Fault-Tolerant Breakthrough
IBM has made significant progress in its quest for fault-tolerant quantum computing. The company has successfully connected and cooled down two cryogenic modules into a single environment, marking an important milestone on its path to delivering the IBM Quantum Starling in 2029.
The new architecture is designed to scale and link hundreds of quantum chips, supporting IBM's roadmap toward fault-tolerant quantum computing. The first two operational modules stand over 8 feet tall and wide, with initial tests demonstrating they can jointly cool down to 4 Kelvin (the temperature of liquid helium) in under 5 days.
IBM's new box-shaped design allows for more wiring space within the modules, enabling more chip-to-chip connections. The company plans to install IBM Quantum Nighthawk processors into the cryogenic modules later this year to expand operational performance testing.
Jay Gambetta, Director of IBM Research and IBM Fellow, commented on the achievement: 'Bringing fault-tolerant quantum computers to industries depends on several fundamental advances.'
