IBM Connects First Modular Cryogenic System
IBM has made significant progress in its quest to build a fault-tolerant quantum computer. The company announced that it has successfully connected and cooled two cryogenic modules into a single ultra-cold environment, reaching temperatures below 15 millikelvin.
This achievement validates IBM's modular architecture, which is designed to link hundreds of quantum chips into a single system. The technology will serve as the foundation for IBM Quantum Starling, expected to be the world's first fault-tolerant quantum computer by 2029.
The new system departs from IBM's previous approach and allows modules to be arranged in tight rows with each module's vacuum enclosure offering up to 12 times more wiring space than its most widely deployed quantum systems. This expanded capacity enables more chip-to-chip connections both within individual modules and across multiple units.
