IBM Connects First Modular Cryogenic Systems for Fault-Tolerant Quantum Computer
IBM has taken a significant step towards building a fault-tolerant quantum computer by successfully connecting and cooling down its first modular cryogenic systems. These new architecture modules are designed to scale into a powerful quantum computer capable of solving large problems, with the goal of delivering the world's first fault-tolerant quantum computer in 2029.
The company has developed a new box-shaped design that allows modules to connect in a tight row and use larger wiring space to directly link quantum processors with IBM's 'L-coupler' technology. L-couplers connect separate quantum chips together to share information, communicate, and operate as part of a larger quantum computer.
The first two operational modules stand over 8 feet tall and wide, and initial tests demonstrated they can jointly cool down to 4 Kelvin in under 5 days, reaching a final temperature of below 15 millikelvin shortly after. This is more than 180 times colder than deep space.
