IBM Cracks Under Execution Pressure Amid Customer Spending Shift

IBM CEO Arvind Krishna attributed the company's disappointing second quarter software sales to 'execution' shortcomings. In its Q2 earnings call, IBM management revealed that a significant shift in customer spending from certain parts of its software portfolio to AI-focused hardware components outside of IBM's traditional offerings contributed to the shortfall.

Krisha noted that this shift was largely due to clients prioritizing other capex investments, such as servers, storage, and memory purchases, ahead of expected price increases. CFO James Kavanaugh explained that IBM witnessed a 'shift in client spending priorities' during the end of June, with many clients opting for supply-constrained infrastructure.

The company reported that it failed to close a double-digit number of large deals on the timelines they expected, accounting for most of the shortfall. However, Krishna claimed that about one-third of those shifted deals had since closed, indicating 'deferral and not destruction.'

Krisha expressed confidence in IBM's business, stating that their conviction in its strength remains unchanged. He also highlighted plans to increase AI use to enhance software development, sales, marketing efforts, and supply chain optimization.
