IBM Expands Quantum Computing Footprint with New Innovation Hub
International Business Machines (IBM) has expanded its quantum computing footprint through a new innovation hub at ETH Zurich in collaboration with Lockheed Martin. The project, which brings an IBM Quantum System Two to the Swiss National Supercomputing Centre in Lugano, will operate under an offset agreement with armasuisse, Switzerland's Federal Office for Defense Procurement. This partnership is expected to support research in areas such as chemistry, materials science, optimization, and financial services.
The hub, powered by IBM's Quantum Nighthawk processor, will give Swiss businesses, startups, and academic institutions access to quantum computing technology. In addition, the company will offer courses, certifications, workshops, and hackathons to support quantum education. This collaboration also strengthens IBM's long-standing relationship with ETH Zurich and supports a new 10-year effort to develop foundational algorithms for AI and quantum computing.
IBM is facing competition from other tech giants, including Microsoft and Alphabet (Google). These companies are advancing their own quantum computing research through collaborations and developments. Microsoft is working on new approaches to quantum technologies, while Google is exploring quantum applications in areas such as optimization, simulation, and advanced scientific calculations.
