IBM Hits Quantum Advantage Milestone, Paving Way for Future Breakthroughs

IBM has reached a major milestone in quantum computing, achieving verified quantum advantage. Researchers from IBM and the University of Chicago completed a computation that would require prohibitive runtimes for leading classical simulation methods.

The team encoded 70 logical qubits using a new error-correction method, one of the largest demonstrations of logical quantum computing to date. They executed 2,415 logical two-qubit operations and 468 logical T gates, while achieving logical error rates ten times lower than the underlying physical error rates.

This achievement is significant because it demonstrates that IBM's quantum computer can solve computationally hard problems more efficiently than classical computers. Verification remains a challenge in establishing experimental quantum advantage, but this experiment develops techniques to better characterize the fidelity of hard quantum states under noise.

IBM plans to invest over $10 billion in quantum computing over the next five years and expects to deliver its first large-scale, fault-tolerant quantum computer by 2029. IBM Chief Executive Arvind Krishna also predicted that quantum computing would have a 'measurable impact' on IBM's top and bottom line by 2028 or 2029, and could generate 'a trillion dollars of value' by the end of the 2030s.
