IBM Invests $5 Billion in AI-Powered Open-Source Security Initiative
IBM has announced a $5 billion commitment to an initiative called Project Lightwell, in partnership with Red Hat. The project aims to create an AI-powered security framework for open-source software used across Fortune 500 infrastructure.
The initiative combines advanced AI systems with over 20,000 engineers to detect and patch vulnerabilities at scale. IBM stated that open source software forms the foundation for more than 90% of Fortune 500 infrastructure, and advances in frontier AI are accelerating vulnerability discovery.
Project Lightwell establishes a 'trusted enterprise clearinghouse' combined with a global engineering force to identify and fix vulnerabilities at scale. The clearinghouse will act as a security coordination layer, using advanced AI to validate and test fixes across an unprecedented volume of open source code.
