IBM Links AI Costs to Business Outcomes with New Apptio Feature
IBM is expanding its Apptio platform to help companies quantify the economic benefits of their AI initiatives. The new feature, called AI Value & ROI, connects the costs of models, tokens, infrastructure, and personnel with specific business outcomes such as revenue, productivity, processing time, or avoided expenses.
The system aims to bridge the gap between token consumption and actual value, allowing IT managers, finance departments, AI governance teams, and business units to see how much an AI initiative costs, what metrics it's intended to change, and whether expected results are actually achieved.
Apptio AI Value & ROI builds on IBM Cloudability, which provides visibility into and attribution of token expenditure. The system also incorporates Apptio AI TCO & Usage, which consolidates financial, operational, and usage data from various sources to allocate costs by model, application, and business unit.
The solution connects these costs with business outcomes using a framework called Proof Metrics, which allows companies to define measurable objectives and track progress. IBM assigns measurable outcomes to five areas: revenue, costs, speed, productivity, and risk.
