IBM Mainframe Chip Revolutionizes Hybrid Computing
IBM is pushing the boundaries of its mainframe technology by developing a dual-architecture processor chip that can run both Arm and Z software on the same cores.
The new chip, which was showcased at Hot Chips 2026, uses an 11-core design built on a 2-nanometer process and operates above 5.7 GHz.
This significant change allows each core to natively execute both z/Architecture and AArch64 instructions without emulation or separate Arm and Z cores, making it easier for customers to run Linux, cloud-native, and AI software alongside mainframe applications.
The processor includes a set of specialized accelerators for tasks such as AI inference, data processing, compression, cryptography, and sorting. Its cache system is substantial with 36 MB private L2 cache, 432 MB virtual L3 cache, and up to 3.5 GB of virtual L4 cache.
IBM's mainframes continue to run critical workloads in major companies, especially in financial services, where 77 out of the world's 100 largest banks use the platforms.
