IBM Mainframe Processor Revolutionizes Hybrid Cloud Infrastructure
IBM has unveiled a groundbreaking dual-architecture mainframe processor at the Hot Chips conference. This chip, built on a 2 nanometer process, can run both IBM and Arm instructions concurrently on the same silicon cores.
The new processor is designed to bridge modern cloud software with traditional high-volume transaction systems. Each of its 11 high-performance cores operates at more than 5.7 GHz and executes Arm and IBM code simultaneously.
The integration of AI accelerators for live fraud detection and an on-chip data processing unit to speed up storage traffic is also a significant feature of this chip.
This innovation marks the first major hardware milestone from the direct technical partnership between IBM and Arm. By bringing native Arm support directly into mainframe hardware, IBM opens its platform to 22 million developers worldwide who build cloud software.
