IBM Nighthawk r2 Quantum Processor Delivers Record-Breaking Circuit Throughput
IBM has unveiled its Nighthawk r2 quantum processor through the IBM Quantum Platform. The new qubit-reset architecture delivers up to a 25-fold increase in circuit throughput compared to previous generations, including Heron systems.
The 120-qubit processor can execute more than 100,000 circuits per second, according to IBM. The company says this is achieved by pairing each programmable qubit with a dedicated reset element that connects it to a cold environment through a tunable coupler, drawing away its energy.
This faster energy dissipation helps reduce the overall idle interval between circuit executions to as little as one microsecond. The active-reset capability reduces initialization error by approximately 25 times while maintaining Heron-class gate fidelity and leaving neighboring qubits undisturbed.
