IBM Offers Free AI-Powered Security Service to US Research Institutions
IBM and Red Hat have announced that they will be providing over 185 US research universities and 100 NGOs and think tanks with free access to their Lightwell service. This AI-powered tool is designed to help organisations address vulnerabilities in open-source software by identifying, validating, and remediating weaknesses in software dependencies.
Eligible institutions will receive digitally signed fixes that are tailored to the specific software versions they already use, potentially avoiding costly or disruptive upgrades. The service operates within each institution's existing environment and does not require IBM or Red Hat to access proprietary source code, research, or organisational data.
The Lightwell library has expanded from 6,500 to over 8,000 validated and remediated package versions since its announcement in May 2026, including fixes for 64 previously undisclosed vulnerabilities. The programme aims to address concerns that universities and nonprofit organisations often depend heavily on open-source software but lack the specialist staff needed to identify and repair vulnerabilities.
Onboarding for eligible institutions will begin in August 2026, and participants will receive source code, validated binaries, compliance documentation, and Software Bills of Materials. IBM and Red Hat will also provide information and support to help institutions assess their open-source environments and integrate relevant packages into existing development workflows.
