IBM Pioneers Hybrid Z-ARM Architecture, Revolutionizing Mainframe Computing
The latest Hot Chips conference saw significant developments in AI processors, with several high-performance processor announcements. IBM's innovative approach combines its Z architecture with the ARM instruction set, enabling native execution of both IBM Z and ARM AArch64 software on the same CPU cores.
'Every core on the chip executes both z/Architecture and ARM,' said Matthew Kimball, principal analyst at Moor Insights & Strategy. 'Not through emulation, not through a translation layer, and not by parking a block of ARM cores in a corner of the die.' This breakthrough gives IBM's future Z and LinuxONE processors access to the vast ARM software ecosystem while preserving their security, availability, and operational characteristics.
Fujitsu showed another approach with its Monaka processor, featuring 144 ARM cores for high-performance computing (HPC). ARM also announced its AGI processor for AI data centers, integrating up to 136 Neoverse V3 cores on two chiplets. Meanwhile, Nvidia revealed more details about its Olympus ARM-based core, designed with AI agents in mind.
