IBM Pours $10B into Quantum Computing Ambitions
IBM has unveiled an ambitious plan to invest more than $10 billion over five years in its quantum computing efforts. The goal is to bring a commercial, large-scale system to market by 2029.
The investment will be distributed across research and development, capital expenditures, manufacturing expansion, and targeted corporate acquisitions.
IBM already operates over 90 quantum installations globally and aims to deploy a machine capable of executing 100 million quantum gate operations. This would eclipse standard supercomputers and enable complex calculations faster than traditional systems.
The $10 billion spending plan comes after IBM secured a $1 billion grant from the U.S. government, which it is matching with its own capital to establish Anderon, a new subsidiary based in Albany, New York.
