IBM Puts Quantum Computing On Track With Modular Cooling Breakthrough
IBM has made significant progress in its pursuit of building a fault-tolerant quantum computer. The company recently connected and cooled two cryogenic modules in a single environment, marking an important milestone in its plans to deliver IBM Quantum Starling in 2029.
The modular cooling system is designed to support hundreds of connected quantum chips, which will be used in the Quantum Starling system. Each module measures over 8 feet tall and 8 feet wide when combined, providing up to 12 times more wiring space than IBM's current systems.
Initial tests showed that the modules can cool to a temperature of 4 Kelvin (the temperature of liquid helium) in less than five days, with some reaching below 15 millikelvin - close to absolute zero. These extremely low temperatures are necessary for keeping quantum processors working properly.
