IBM Quantum Computer Cracks Fusion Fuel Problem with FLiBe Chemistry Breakthrough
IBM has made significant progress in solving a long-standing problem in fusion fuel production using its quantum computer. The company, along with Oak Ridge National Laboratory and Cleveland Clinic, used quantum hardware to model FLiBe (a molten salt made from fluorine, lithium, and beryllium) chemistry, which is crucial for fusion reactor blankets.
The team calculated nine molecular configurations of FLiBe, the first known computations of this type on quantum computers. The workflow was not purely quantum magic; classical supercomputers at Oak Ridge still did significant work, while IBM's quantum hardware handled the harder electronic-structure fragments and AI helped connect parts of the process.
The result is useful because it shows that quantum computers can be used to tackle complex chemistry problems that are difficult or impossible for classical computers. However, the full reactor blanket is a complex system that cannot be accurately modeled by simply scaling up these calculations.
