IBM Quantum Computer Solves Classically Intractable Problem in Record Time
IBM and researchers at the University of Chicago have achieved a significant milestone in quantum computing by solving a problem that is classically intractable. The team used a new error correction strategy to encode 70 logical qubits, which are protected from errors and noise, and tackled a challenging task that would be impractical for classical computers.
The experiment was completed in approximately 15 minutes on the IBM quantum computer, while leading classical simulation methods would face prohibitive runtimes. The researchers used a newly designed form of encoded quantum circuit to perform the calculation, which provided evidence that the quantum computer produced a reliable result.
The team's method preserves the same computational hardness criteria associated with random circuit sampling (RCS), making it extremely difficult for classical computers to reproduce the results. However, the added structure allows errors to be detected during the quantum computation, increasing confidence in the accuracy of the quantum computer's output.
