IBM Rebound Fueled by AI-Focused Acquisitions
IBM's CEO Arvind Krishna acknowledged that the company experienced an execution shortfall in its second quarter software sales, but expressed confidence in the company's ability to adapt and rebound.
The shortfall was primarily due to a shift in customer spending priorities towards supply chain-constrained hardware and cybersecurity-focused software, which led to a delay in closing large deals. According to Krishna, about one-third of the delayed deals had since closed, indicating that the issue was likely a deferral rather than destruction of business.
Krisha highlighted IBM's plans to increase its use of AI to enhance software development, sales and marketing efforts, and supply chain optimization. The company is also accelerating changes to its go-to-market model to expand coverage across thousands of additional clients where its portfolio is highly relevant. IBM's recent software-focused acquisitions, including Red Hat, HashiCorp, and Confluent, are expected to power a majority of the company's high-margin subscription-based recurring software revenues.
Krisha emphasized that IBM's conviction in the strength of its business remains unchanged, despite the challenges faced in the second quarter. The company expects to continue evolving how it engages clients and bringing its full breadth of innovation to bear on their most important priorities.
