IBM Returns to Canadian Bond Market After 14-Year Absence
International Business Machines Corp. (no specific ticker mentioned) has made its first foray into the Canadian bond market since 2012, selling C$2.75 billion ($1.97 billion) of corporate bonds on Monday.
The sale marks a significant milestone in IBM's investment strategy, which is part of a broader trend of non-Canadian firms tapping into Canada's corporate-debt market. The company has joined the likes of Amazon.com Inc. and Alphabet Inc., which have already issued so-called Maple notes this year.
According to data compiled by Bloomberg, sales of Maple notes by foreign firms have reached an all-time high in 2026, with a record-breaking amount raised through these offerings. This trend is expected to continue, reshaping Canada's corporate-debt market in the process.
