IBM Sees Rebound After Software Shortfall Amid Shift in Customer Spending

IBM's second quarter software shortfall was attributed to a sudden and dramatic shift in customer spending from its traditional software portfolio towards AI-focused hardware components, according to CEO Arvind Krishna. This shift led to the vendor failing to close a double-digit number of 'large deals' on the expected timelines, accounting for the majority of the shortfall.

Krishna warned that the shortfall was limited to a capex sensitive area of the portfolio and that IBM has already started to see a rebound. He noted that about one-third of the shifted deals have since closed, with the remaining deals expected to close over the next six months.

IBM's CFO James Kavanaugh attributed the shift in client spending priorities to supply chain constrained hardware and cybersecurity-focused software purchases, moving away from IBM's core software and infrastructure competencies. He highlighted that the vendor witnessed a 'shift in client spending priorities' during the end of June, with clients prioritizing servers, storage, and memory purchases ahead of expected price increases.

Krishna expressed confidence in the face of investor questions, stating that IBM's conviction in the strength of its business remains unchanged. He emphasized that the vendor must continue to evolve how it engages clients, bringing the full breadth of IBM's innovation to bear on their most important priorities.
