IBM Sees Rebound as Client Spending Shifts Towards AI-Focused Hardware
IBM CEO Arvind Krishna acknowledged that the company's software sales took a hit in its second quarter, but he expressed confidence that IBM will rebound. The shortfall was largely due to a shift in customer spending priorities towards AI-focused hardware components and cybersecurity software.
Krishna attributed the decline to a sudden shift in client spending during the end of June, which favored servers, storage, and memory purchases ahead of expected price increases. This led to IBM missing out on closing a double-digit number of large deals, accounting for most of the shortfall.
The CEO noted that about one-third of the delayed deals had since closed, indicating that it was a deferral rather than destruction. Krishna emphasized that IBM's conviction in its business and ability to grow remains unchanged.
