IBM Sets Sights on Quantum Computing Payoff within Two Years
IBM is making bold predictions about its investment in quantum computing, anticipating a tangible financial return by 2028 or 2029. This forecast comes after recent research with startup Algorithmiq demonstrated quantum advantage, where IBM's systems outperformed classical computers on specific tasks.
The company's confidence stems from its ability to solve complex computational problems more efficiently and accurately than conventional methods. CEO Arvind Krishna emphasized the potential for quantum computing to accelerate advancements in areas like battery technology, materials science, fusion energy, and pharmaceutical development.
IBM has invested $1 billion in a dedicated quantum chip foundry, matched by a commitment from the U.S. Department of Commerce through the CHIPS incentive. Despite recent market fluctuations, Krishna reassured investors that delayed capital spending projects were postponements, not cancellations.
