IBM Stock Surges on Quantum Computing Deals and AI Breakthroughs
International Business Machines (IBM) saw its stock price surge by 3.9% on Friday, reaching as high as $243.63 and closing at $243.14. The company's market capitalization stands at $229.07 billion.
This increase is attributed to several positive developments for IBM. Firstly, the company has partnered with Lockheed Martin to establish a quantum innovation hub at ETH Zurich through a Swiss defense offset agreement. This facility will host Switzerland's first IBM Quantum System Two, combining IBM's Nighthawk r2 processor with the Alps supercomputer and providing researchers and businesses access to this technology until 2029.
This collaboration not only provides institutional exposure to quantum computing for IBM but also has potential applications in areas such as quantum sensing, navigation, advanced materials, and aerospace manufacturing. Furthermore, IBM's existing software and AI relationships with Lockheed Martin may increase switching costs and strengthen IBM's position in defense-oriented hybrid computing.
Additionally, IBM and NASA released an open-source lunar foundation model trained on decades of Moon-observation data. This model improves the identification of features such as ice deposits and craters by up to 23%, highlighting IBM's AI capabilities and potential use in scientific and government projects.
