IBM Takes Quantum Computing Leap with Cryogenic Module Breakthrough
IBM Corporation has made significant progress in its quest to build a large-scale fault-tolerant quantum computer by 2029. The company announced that it successfully connected and cooled two new cryogenic quantum modules inside a single system, marking a major engineering milestone.
The setup is designed to eventually link hundreds of quantum chips, enabling IBM to scale quantum computers beyond the limits of a single processor. Each module can cool to below 15 millikelvin and offers up to 12 times more wiring space than IBM's most widely used quantum systems.
IBM plans to use its 'L-coupler' technology to connect separate processors, aiming to link multiple processors into a quantum computer with at least 1,000 programmable qubits by 2027. The company also expects to install its Nighthawk processors into the new cryogenic modules later this year for further testing.
