IBM Unveils AI-DLC: A Revolutionary Software Development Methodology

IBM has introduced the AI-DLC (AI-driven development lifecycle), a new software development methodology that leverages large language models to augment human collaboration throughout every step of the process. Coined by AWS's Raja SP in 2025, the AI-DLC represents a significant evolution from traditional methodologies like Agile and Scrum.

The AI-DLC is designed to treat a large-language model or group of models as an active collaborator throughout software development. This means that humans take on a more supervisory role, while AI performs work and maintains context across disciplines. The methodology emphasizes continuous feedback and collaboration between humans and AI, allowing for more efficient and effective project management.

The AI-DLC framework consists of 10 key principles, including reimagining the software development lifecycle, reversing the conversation direction, and integrating design techniques into the core. These principles are designed to standardize engineering quality, preserve context across projects, and promote human-AI symbiosis.
