IBM Unveils Breakthrough Cryogenic System for Quantum Computing
IBM has made significant progress in its quest to build a large-scale fault-tolerant quantum computer by 2029. The company successfully connected and cooled two new cryogenic quantum modules inside a single system, which will eventually be able to link hundreds of quantum chips.
The setup allows for more wiring space, up to 12 times more than IBM's most widely used quantum systems. This extra room is crucial because larger quantum machines require many more connections between chips.
IBM plans to use its 'L-coupler' technology to connect separate processors so they can work together as one larger system. By 2027, the company aims to link multiple processors into a quantum computer with at least 1,000 programmable qubits.
The next step will be to install Nighthawk processors into the new cryogenic modules for further testing. IBM's long-term target is to deliver its Quantum Starling system in 2029 as the world's first fault-tolerant quantum computer, which could hold thousands of qubits per module.
