IBM Unveils Disaggregated Hyperconverged Infrastructure: A New Era in Data Center Management
Disaggregated hyperconverged infrastructure (dHCI) is an innovative data center approach that combines the streamlined management of hyperconverged infrastructure (HCI) with the granular scalability of disaggregation.
dHCI presents IT resources through a unified management layer while enabling teams to scale storage and compute individually, making it well-suited for unpredictable or intensive enterprise workloads such as big data and predictive analytics, artificial intelligence (AI), and mixed workloads.
The concept of dHCI was introduced by Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) in 2019 with its HPE Nimble Storage dHCI infrastructure platform, although NetApp reportedly developed a similar framework as early as 2017. Other vendors have since incorporated dHCI concepts into their own infrastructure solutions.
Unlike traditional HCI, which bundles storage, compute, and networking resources together, dHCI separates these resources into individual pools, allowing teams to scale one resource without scaling the others. This approach can help prevent over-provisioning and reduce costs.
