IBM Unveils Dual-Architecture Mainframe Processor for Enterprise Computing
IBM has unveiled its first dual-architecture mainframe processor, designed to enable enterprises to run operating systems and applications on both IBM and Arm compute platforms in future IBM Z and LinuxONE systems.
The processor is a result of the collaboration between IBM and Arm established in April 2026. It will support Arm-native workloads alongside IBM environments with AI acceleration, encryption, and enterprise reliability.
With more than 22 million developers worldwide, the Arm software ecosystem supports a broad range of applications from cloud to edge, including cloud-native and AI software shaping modern infrastructure.
The new processor will bring this ecosystem to the IBM platforms known for transaction processing and data-intensive operations. Arm workloads will benefit from IBM's enterprise-grade capabilities, including enhanced reliability, hardware-level fault detection and recovery, advanced encryption, secure key management, and AI acceleration.
