IBM Unveils Dual-Architecture Mainframe Processor with Native Arm Support
IBM has announced a significant breakthrough in its collaboration with Arm, unveiling a dual-architecture mainframe processor that supports both IBM and Arm compute platforms. This innovation allows enterprises to run operating systems and applications on both IBM Z and LinuxONE systems, providing greater flexibility for modernizing their application portfolios.
The new processor is built using 2-nanometer technology and features 11 high-performance cores operating at over 5.7 GHz, along with AI inference accelerators and a dedicated on-chip data processing unit for I/O acceleration.
According to IBM, the dual-architecture design enables each processor core to execute Arm and IBM Z instructions concurrently, prioritizing the platform's established performance, security, encryption, and availability characteristics.
This advancement addresses a growing need for infrastructure flexibility as organizations integrate AI into their core business operations.
