IBM Unveils Dual-Architecture Mainframe Processor With Native Arm Support
IBM has unveiled a new dual-architecture mainframe processor that supports both IBM and Arm computing environments. The processor, announced at the Hot Chips conference, represents the first major development from the collaboration between IBM and Arm, which was announced in April. This technology allows organizations to operate Arm-native Linux environments alongside z/OS and Linux on IBM Z infrastructure.
The new chip will be manufactured using a 2-nanometre technology node and feature 11 high-performance cores capable of operating at frequencies above 5.7 GHz. Each individual core is designed to execute both Arm and IBM Z instructions, or Arm and LinuxONE instructions, natively and concurrently. This approach could allow enterprises to combine workloads from different computing architectures within the same mainframe environment.
IBM's new processor will incorporate dedicated technologies aimed at artificial intelligence and data-intensive workloads. The chip will include AI inference accelerators designed to support functions such as fraud detection during transactions, alongside a dedicated on-chip data processing unit intended to accelerate input/output operations, and a large cache architecture.
