IBM Unveils Groundbreaking Sub-1NM Chip Tech with 5-Year Commercial Horizon
IBM has announced a significant breakthrough in chip technology, developing a sub-1nm chip that could revolutionize how future processors are designed. The company's 0.7 nanometre chip technology is still at the research-demonstration stage and may take years to become commercially manufacturable.
Rahul Rao, distinguished engineer at IBM India Systems Development Lab, stated that this technology marks a shift in how future processors will be designed. The innovation uses a staggered complementary field-effect transistor (CFET) architecture at the 0.7nm node, which places n-type and p-type transistors on top of each other to enable greater density within the same silicon area.
IBM's announcement in June described this technology as the world's first sub-1nm chip technology, based on a three-dimensional transistor architecture called CFET. While the breakthrough is promising, it's essential to note that the path from research to commercialization can be long and challenging.
