IBM Unveils Nighthawk r2 Quantum Processor with 25x Improved Computation Speed
IBM has announced its latest quantum processor, Nighthawk r2, boasting a significant improvement in computation speed. With over 25 times more circuits than its predecessor and containing more than 7,500 gates, this processor is a major milestone in the company's Quantum Roadmap. The Nighthawk r2 is part of IBM's efforts to build commercial-scale quantum computers, with a goal of achieving a billion circuits and over 2000 qubits by 2033.
The processor addresses a common bottleneck in quantum computing: conditional reset. This process, which takes several microseconds, prevents the qubits from returning to their ground state before the next computation can begin. IBM has replaced this with a dissipative reset gadget, reducing the time it takes for each qubit to return to its ground state from 200 microseconds to just 25 nanoseconds.
This innovation not only increases computation speeds but also reduces initialization errors by 25 times and allows for more efficient execution of workloads. The Nighthawk r2 is now available on IBM's Quantum Platform, marking a significant step forward in the development of quantum computing technology.
